I'm playing around with incomplete columnar ciphers. What is the fastest was to convert rows to columns when the columns may not all be the same length?

Thanks
Example:
rows = [ 'SOME', 'TEXT', 'OFSO', 'MELE', 'NGTH']How do I get to columns the fastest way?
Example Continued:
columns = [ 'STOMN', 'OEFEG', 'MXSLT', 'ETOEH']I already did a try/except iteration loop but I'm told it is horribly slow. I also did the method from the Sweigart's book but it seems like it does not work right with complete columnar types. / 0 problems etc. I would also just like to know what is the fastest way code wise. I haven't learned C yet. I'm blowing it off as long as humanly possible for reasons I won't get into here. Trying to get every last ounce out of Python I can before I switch.
Thanks
