ImportError: No module named pymysql - On Apache2 for Python 2.7 on Mac

ImportError: No module named pymysql - On Apache2 for Python 2.7 on Mac

Hi guys

I'm trying to get Python fully functioning as a dev environment on my macbook (Mac OS Mojave, 10.14.5) - its a hang of a lot harder to setup than any Linux box I've done in the past...

Thanks heaps in advance...

I am running Apache2, mysql and Python in both 2.7 and 3.x - 2.7 runs across Apache2 as the Mac default.

Apache2 is fully functioning - test python files render HTTP from python "print" function (That was another mission to solve...)

When I run the script in native python it functions great and connects to the database and inserts the data. (You will see in the commented out part that I have used both pymysql and the mysql Connector). When I run it in Apache2. I get the error:

ImportError: No module named pymysql

I Get the same error if I use the mysql Connector (just with mysql connector error).


The HTTP Error page has the following error:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [email protected] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.



But again just to clarify, this script works in native python on the same macbook, just not in Apache2!

If a module is not importable, it means that sys.path is incorrect. Try to do this: before the first import, write
import sys
raise RuntimeError(sys.path)
then see why pymysql is not on the path. You could compare with the result of

In addition to this there is pymysql in the path but not as far as I can tell where it is expecting to see it: - I may have to copy it into the path somehow or add it in via the script..?

problem solved

I had to add the folder to the path in addition and then comment out the print pymysql

import logging
logging.basicConfig(filename='example.log',level=logging.DEBUG)
import cgitb
cgitb.enable

import sys
sys.path.append("/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages")
#The above directory contains the pymysql directory that is used to interact with mysql
#raise RuntimeError(sys.path)

import pymysql
#print(pymysql)

A better way would be to add this in a file named sitecustomize.py
import site
site.addsitedir('/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages')
Now the question is where to put the sitecustomize.py. See if you already have one, otherwise, try in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages perhaps.

Awesome idea.

I had a look in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages and there was a file called Extras.pth so a quick cat of that revealed directories.

I then appended to the end of the file the above framework directory, commented out the sys.path.add in my code and boom it works.

I assume that this way is ok for Python... ?

It will probably work for what you want to do but it is not as complete as the addsitedir() method because the way you do it, python will not process the .pth files from the additional site-packages directory. With the addsitedir() method, it will also process these files.
