Migration to a modern forum engine

i contacted python.org about adding the forums section, and they approved. Before that they didn't even have a forum section under community. Some of us are not fond of communicating only through IRC, mailing lists, Stack Overflow, or reddit. We much prefer the forum structure. There are not that many python forums. A lot of them are multiple programming languages with a category for python. I cant think of a free to use dedicated python forum for english other than subreddits. And if they do exist, they are not active enough, or do not enough programmers to aid user questions to bump them on Google queries.

Also regarding themes:
There are a ton of already pre-built ones by mybb users. Some cost, some are free. I like some themes such as this one, but it is currently only for ACP.

There are some great themes, I looked at them all and this would be my top picks:

That one is pretty sweet looking. I dig the sidebar, and the clean and simple look of it.

I've done it 3 times. phpBB2 -> phpBB3 -> wbb3.0 -> wbb5.0 (is planed).
The change was not easy. Another forum changed from vBulletin to XenForo.
I had many issues with migration and the others also.

Problems with encoding, changed links, which have to be rewritten by modrewrite.
If you think you've done everything, the next problems are coming up.

If you do the change, I guess you'll be busy for the next two weeks.
For guests it's easy to ask, but someone has to do the job.

We are for sure not change any time soon.
We have stable setup now,and there have put in lot of work to get here.
I am also not willing to change MyBB 2.0 right after it come out,it will break a lot stuff that we have now.
When/if MyBB 2.x is stable and if people like it,we can start to discuss a upgrade.

I think the forum is very functional the way it is now.
As a testimony to that, just look at the number of visitors today, and compare to 2013.

Larz and snippsat are correct. Functionality is more important. While we were under PhpBB there were weekly MySQL errors bringing the forums to its knees and bad admins that basically just lost over a decade worth of data with not caring about the forum at all. Though that has nothing to do with PhpBB and all to do with admins; the forum, compared to before, is in it's heyday now.

So who funds this forum? What if the donations do not make it to the mark? Who pays? Python.org?

Python.org has nothing to do with this forum.
The PSF sponsors python.org: https://www.python.org/psf-landing/

I guess this forum is in private hand and there is no organization behind nor they get money from the PSF.

Currently, all of the expenses come right out of the administrator's pocket.
You can read who we are and we offer a way to make a donation if you feel so.
