Python 3 install problem

I'm having a bad time installing Python3 on a new Linux Mint system. I extracted the install files to a directory in the root drive and executed the ./configure command. All went well until the system tried looking for a C Compiler. The make command does not work because of the error. I admit I'm a newbie with Python and am wondering what the problem is and how to fix it.
