But I apparently have the urge to make this forum with all the bells and whistles like VBulletin, but without paying for vbulletin.

This is a feature straight from vBulletin that shows the first X chars of the OP in a tooltip hovering over the thread table cell. 
   

In addition it also shows a tooptip of the last users post if hovering over "last post" link
   

There are no tooltips on the index page.

Wavic means, show more text in the tooltip, like 3 instead of 2 rows.

I did end up doubling the size. Now its showing 200 chars, instead of 100 as shown in the screenshots of the OP.

There is a warning in the plugin to not go over 200 chars. Not sure what would happen if you do.
