what is a magnet link

Ok, this has nothing to do with python (yet) but if I can get what's behind it it will
Can anyone explain what a magnet link is, and how it differs from VPN is it free?
magnet links connect you with peers, an alternative to downloading the torrent file.
a VPN can protect yourself behind a wall from your ISP so they cant find what you are torrenting. They only know that you are connecting to your VPN, nothing after that point. A magent link does not conceal your downloading activities. VPN is an extra layer of protection for illegal downloading. IF you are downloading legit torrents, like linux, it doesnt matter.

I found a 15GB file which contains every domain name at the time it was created.
It has to be downloaded wither by torrent or magnetic link Perhaps there is another way to get what i am looking for, and that is finding sites with a wildcard for example *.*OpenData*.* other than google search

If it's not illegal, it's fine to download. The magnet link is just a convenience.
im not sure of a way programmatically to do that other than scan that file. Maybe someone else know...

Download a torrent client to download it, like Deluge, Utorrent, Ktorrent, etc. download the torrent and open it fro the client to start downloading. If using magnet links, copy the magnet link, and insert it into the client as a URL, and add it to start downloading.

Well, I downloaded and installed deluge - I let you know when done.
I'll probably also load it into PostgreSQL which will take a while.

I am using Deluge and pretty much. When you download something with a magnet link there is no information what is behaind it.

I usually prefer downloading linux distributions via torrents because they are quicker to get it from seeds/peers than it is to download it directly from a site. It would just depend on your max bits per second with your ISP as to how long it would actually take.
