Words are probably better than just numbers, otherwise someone somewhere in the world will likely be confused.
As a merican, I see "mm/dd/yyyy" all the time, and I hate it. It just doesn't make any sense to go "general-specific-much more general". Increasingly less specific seems like the way it should be, especially since most people are conscious of what the current month/year are, so the only relevant number is the date itself... so having date first makes the most sense to me.
That said, "MonthName day, YYYY" is unambiguous enough to look good while also getting the job done. Same for similar variants, like "MMM-dd-YYYY".
