i think we should entice users to upload their photos to the forum, and only post links to image hosts when that is not possible (too large of size, etc).

Yes,think most do that,example in a resent post
So when all images are https they will preview in post.
Had he used and image host with http there would be no preview only links.

I think this is not a problem anymore,as almost all host use https,
so the DVZ Secure Content plugin can be on an not cause(preview image in post problem) that was the problem before.
