i did a color version, much slower in C. i used color bits (RGB) to form a type of DNA and let new cells inherit color bits to see how things would spread. old cells just kept the same colors. empty spaces were black.  i had many other ideas i never implemented.  today i might try making the cells show up as smilie faces
