they were all along. the difference is you have IPv6 and your browser was getting the IPv6 answer or preferring to use IPv6 if it got both. my DNS was the culprit. i had a bad address in the AAAA record for ipal.net. i could have just removed it and forced the use of IPv4. but instead, i got it to use the Amazon S3 dual-stack feature.
