Why does this hang the system up

We have not seen the rest of your code and the problem could likely be there. When the exception is raised, it can be caught somewhere, so it all depends what happens then.
Unless noted otherwise, code in my posts should be understood as "coding suggestions", and its use may require more neurones than the two necessary for Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V.
