see the last 2 paragraphs of the answer by sourcejedi in this post (currently the only answer). do you think this is something that can be done in Python? what would be nice is no need to do the pivot_root() syscall, which looks to be hard to do in Python. the big issue i see is the Python interpreter file. deleting it from initramfs might be problematic.
