There is going to be one way that someone doesnt like it regardless of which is decided. The whole point was to make it readable, and because its Dec and not 12, is readable to everyone. Plus it can be changed per user as they wish.
I see logic in it. If you look at rows of dates (a forum for example) reading from left to right, searching for latest thread replies, you only have to scan the first few characters to find whether its somewhat new (Dec) or old (Sept). And if its old, just move on to the next line, whereas if its the current month, you keep reading onto the date to see if is truly recent. The opposite of something like 11-Dec-2016 might catch the eye a month later on 11-Jan-2017 thinking its recent due to the 11 being the first characters to read in which is the same day as current date. But yet is a month old. Why would it have to go in order of DD-MM-YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD anyways?
