There needs to be some actionable text below the image though.

Please check if you have the correct page or contact team.

Not everybody is as tech savvy to know what a "404 error" means in itself.

I think that 10-20 years ago you would have to define it really well. Everyone knows what a 404 is now. And if not they learn. There are tons of creative 404 pages some of which dont explicitly explain what the problem actually is. The best ones do not have basic text explaining what to do as it would ruin the pun.

I also think that being on a programming forum it would be even less likely to have to explain than other websites.

Plus the actual text within the image states the problem. PageNotFound: 404 is visible at the very bottom. I purposely put it so you can see that. As well as the tab title states Page Does not Exist.

This also is not even unique. CSS-tricks.com used this exact style (not currently) awhile ago. Except their text was not pertaining to the issue itself.

In addition, this use to be our 404 page. We never had explained a 404 before and gave even less details than our current one. It was quite boring.

Not sure why you would oppose adding a simple sentence to that page.

Some people can't read pictures that well.. Undecided

Most of the "top 50" examples you linked have a similar explanation in text.

Because the image contains that info within it. If it was just general python code, i might agree.

The whole point of the ripping image was to illustrate the page is broken. The text within it to indicate that its not a fault on the server/forum, but that its just a page that does not exist. The more things added around that, the less it displays that point and loses its flair.

I would be more inclined to add text if a user actually does come along and was confused by it.

Yeah, a custom 404 form is a good way to improve your visitors' experience, so go on with it.

Now I see only a white screen on the page https://python-forum.io/misc.php?action=helped. Code 200 Ok. Is this expected?
