I would add completely. Because every type of government has some things that work, and many that don't
If they added merit reviews, and allowed them to be fired, that would be a great start.

I also do not think you will see any significant change until you can break the bond of party loyalty. In days of old, if you were pro business you voted republican, if you were pro labor, you voted democrat. If your parents voted republican, you voted republican. If they voted democrat, you voted democrat. In either case, you voted a straight ticket. Older people still do it this way, but I have noticed recently, that the younger voters are starting to break this mold.

The other problem, as I see it, at least in the US, is there is no single unifying voice for change. Instead there are so many 'movements' and 'projects', each with their own agenda, that no single voice can be heard above the noise. Heaven forbid the PETA folks joined with the LGBT community, the Black Lives Matter movement, the Green Peace peeps and all the rest and said "Look, we are not making any difference individually, lets join together and work for a common goal, then work on our individual interests."  If we look back, from the anti-war movement of the Vietnam era to the Arab Spring, the Scottish Independence movement, Brexit, Catalonia Independence and so on, the thing they all have in common is the people all spoke as one. Another commonality, is they were all inspired by the younger generation. Perhaps there is hope for the US, if only we can get those darn kids away from their cell phones long enough to take a look around.  Big Grin
If it ain't broke, I just haven't gotten to it yet.

The people must travel. In the country, around the world. They have to meet other people, talk to them. They have to see other cultures. They have to face their laws at least on the surface. When they do that, they will recognize the reasons that shape the people's life. Maybe after that, they will acquire knowledge what has to be done in order to make life better. They live in their bubble and all they know about the world is from TV and internet. How could they change their point of view if nothing is changing in their routines? It's impossible. You can't know the world watching "Discovery" and "National Planet". There is a knowledge which can be acquired only by experience. You can't learn to ride a bicycle just reading how to do that. They have been told that if the health care becomes free the doctors wouldn't be paid well and the quality of the service will collapse. Go to France to see how skilled doctors live.

i want the constitution back, i dont want the media monopolies taking over the berne convention and all global culture/regulation around science/development/invention/authorship with trade agreements, and i dont want america to be the world police.

what party is that? democrats protest war, but wars keep going on everywhere when they elect a democrat. drones are everywhere. republicans cancel tpp (honestly, thank you) which the white-house fast-tracked in the previous, but want to appoint andrei iancu to the us patent office. and while i dont share the lefts pessimism about the current administration regarding foreign policy-- i dont share the rights optimism either.

if you want a "unified voice," youre going to have to write it into the election process so that when everyone wants something different, everyone gets the appropriate amount of what they want.

the closest thing i can think of to that is proportional representation. then instead of these guys running the country all by themselves: http://www.opensecrets.org/pres12/contriball.php our votes actually count part-way. i cant figure that those guys are going to lend a hand to that sort of reform, but there are (legal) ways around that. short of an article v convention it probably wont happen. though even the spectre of an article v convention is enough to push changes through. so thats another way to unify the people, because enough states have to sign on.

A unified voice is difficult in American because we're so diverse here. Oftentimes people point to Nordic countries and their social welfare, and the mindset is very different because they feel unified there when we don't here.

As you mentioned this area, Iceland was the only country in the world which doesn't rush to save the banks with the money of the taxpayers during the post-Lehman Brothers chaos. What happened in the other countries is indicating how sick is the whole system.
