image processing and manipulation

I'm new to python and am looking for advice on the most straight forward approach to my project. I'm looking to write code that will process an image to look for a line that is in a particular location on a barcode and scan it for breaks caused by the printer being low on ink, and then draw lines in the barcode that correspond with the breaks. Any advice or links to tutorials of similar stuff?
